I've been on technology overload throughout the last couple of days. My brain needs some time to “slow down”, so I'm unplugging for the rest of the week. See you this weekend. I'll try to catch up on my TiVo “Now Playing” list…

Dave's a celebrity? (via Doc Searls)
Doc Searls points to Jimmy's post (links below).
Jimmy Guterman in Business 2.0 (subscription required):
…In a world where millions blog regularly, pundits like Lawrence Lessig, Clay Shirky, and Dave Winer aren't celebrities anymore….
My corollary to the first one: Conceiving the Net in static real estate terms [~] “sites” that are “under construction,” for example [~] will give way to more journalistic concepts. Writing. Posting. Linking. Replying. Commenting. Answering. Sourcing.
A whole new world of verbs and verbiage.
Doc, I snipped out some of the quote from Jimmy to highlight the one sentence from his quote about “Dave”. Dave Winer won't be a celebrity, but more of a weblog cultural leader, a more befitting position for someone of his (and frankly your) stature. I've never considered the Lessigs, Searls and Pilgrims celebrities, but voices speaking with authority. Will these voices continue to “carry the crowd” in 2004? Dave's will, I'm sure. I hope yours does, too.
Okay…
Tell me the truth. Are you someone who is reading this site, has a modern mobile phone but has never sent a text message? Come on… let it out. Are you?
Okay, in celebration of the New Year, where literally BILLIONS of text messages will be sent over the next 24 hours around the world in what has become a new tradition we're going to have a little text fest here to get things started in the States.
Okay. First, if you don't know how to send a message from your mobile, simply drop a message in the comments with your phone model and carrier and I or one of the other Mobitopians or maybe one of the dedicated mobilized readers of this blog will help walk you through it.
Then, you send a message to 415 994 7917, which is one of my extra mobile phones which is now turned on and powered up waiting your messages. As the messages come in I'll post them to the weblog.
Then, after you've played, you can then send out messages to *everyone* in your mobile phone book. HOORAY! The U.S. Joins the rest of the world in Peace, Love and Textual Intercourse.
If you're another blog, please link to this. Let the movement begin!

Doc mentions a great gift idea. I love coffee and this is my next purchase, for sure…
The best Christmas gifts any coffee freak can get. Or give..
Presenting the Starbucks Barista espresso/cappuccino machine, and its companion grinder:
This is cool enough to make me want one of these. Reading mail via Pine on a handheld…whooda thunk?

WOOhooo!!!
Making the Nokia 3650/6600 phones now a kick-ass tool to have in emergencies for web admins, SSH has been ported to the Series 60 platform.
Combine this with Yellow FTP and you have yourself a damn-fine way of remotely maintaining a server. Start/stop processes, edit files, etc.
It works like a charm. My coworker Todd and I were just playing with it and it has all the features you need to get the job done. Special characters, control keys, Function keys, etc. and I just tested PINE on it as well – talk about a great way to check email remotely!
And if you happen to have a wireless Palm keyboard, here's an infrared keyboard driver for the Series 60 phones as well. Talk about a mobile office!
Awesome stuff!

Ed Cone on Userland's new management
Posted here so I can't forget the link to the Wired article:
I once went to a Userland Software staff meeting at Dave Winer's house in Woodside, California.
Can that really have been just three years ago?
It was before 9/11, so there has definitely been a kairotic break in time since then.
But so much has happened at the company, too — Brent was still there, JRobb wasn't there yet, Dave was still very hands-on…if I remember correctly, Radio wasn't yet packaged as a blogging product. We think of time moving quickly in the tech world, but sometimes we forget that it moves quickly for people, too.
As a user, I'm happy to see the new management team in place.
Jay Rosen on Howard Dean's campaign methods
Damn, this is a good piece of writing. Jay, you've finally explained in words the emotions I've had rattling around in my heart. While I don't believe in Dean the candidate any more than any other of the folks running, I do believe in what his campaign has done to change politics. *That's* why I want to vote for him; to send a message that I endorse “DeanSpace”, “MeetUp” and small donations as a method of political success.
Server-move-says-what?
So what's the deal with the new server? Well, this weblog and a few more domains have moved to their own server on dedicated bandwith. Our old host was more than kind — we were on his server for free for years and he never complained. I felt bad when last month we transferred nearly 1.5 GB of traffic and we were only the fifth or sixth highest.
Hoping to have my old friend avoid a needless reprimand from his provider, I moved this site on Friday night. Yum. More details over here.
Weekend Summary
Weekend Summary:
Friday night was my wife's ad agency's office party. Every year, Brent Atterberry (nicest guy in the biz) invites the staff to dinner at a local restaurant to say thanks for the hard work. Dinner and company was fabulous–I had a filet mingon to die for.
Saturday was perfect–wake up late, drink coffee and read the local paper, then lunch–all with my wife. I don't usually get to spend slow mornings with Tammy so I savor every moment. We spent the afternoon decorating our Christmas tree, then we went out for the evening on a date, something that's still fun after 8 years together.
Sunday was easy, too. Brunch at Agrario, then work in the basement amassing a pile of stuff to donate to a local charity. We've both realized we have too much stuff we hold on to, so it's off to a better home. I spent the evening hours (up until now) working on a second computer for my side business. Worst part: system needed a bios update to accept a new DIMM. Can't run Win2K server on 64MB, no matter how hard you try… :>
Johnny Carson and Adam's quote of the day
Adam's quote of the day:
qotd december 5. Johnny Carson: “I was so naive as a kid I used to sneak behind the barn and do nothing.” [Adam Curry: Adam Curry's Weblog]
I'm a huge Johnny Carson fan. I grew up begging to stay up late to watch the Tonight Show before Jay Leno destroyed it. Mr. Carson (yes, he deserves the Mr.) always treated the audience with a level of class that Jay doesn't. Note to Jay: you don't have to insult my intelligence or dive low to get a laugh. Watch some Tonight Show reruns for examples.
