Definitive Sound at a Rock Bottom Price

I’m listening to Frank Sinatra sing Antonio Carlos Jobim on some classic audio gear. It’s virgin vinyl, never before played, and running through the best speakers I’ve ever owned.

Here’s a shot from the second floor looking down:

Overall, I can’t be more pleased. Like all true life experiences, there’s a great story behind this. Let’s start with the amp:

We found this Sansui 2000 amp in the furnace room of the Charing house in 2008 when we moved in. It took a year for me to decide to move it and only then to the garage. It had a matching pair of (now awful) Sansui speakers that were good only for garage use. The amp has inputs for phono and tape plus an AUX port.

Part Two: the Speakers

My brother-in-law Blair Smith found these Definitive Technologies speakers at an estate sake near his house. I won’t say how low the price was but call it less than a good dinner for two. This weekend we were in KC to see Blair and Mary, the kids plus Mary’s godfather Bob Jester and his wife Emilie. First thing I did was corral Blair and get the speakers moved to our car. Good news–they fit!

After a fantastic weekend and the trip home, I had a plan. I’d set them up in the dinning room just to test, the figure out what to do next. They haven’t moved yet and I don’t think they will.

A special thanks to Blair for making this all possible. Truly, these are the best speakers I’ve owned!

Domain Updates

I added my stevekirks.com domain to my weblog (finally) and made it the primary way to get to this blog. It’s something I’ve been meaning to do for quite awhile and WordPress made it easy. It’s also time to update my online resume too. I’ll work on that from home later.

Christmas Melancholy

Christmastime each year is an emotional conflict, a battle between the memories of the past and the hope for a new future. Christmas songs sometimes help and hurt, but today, I’m skipping my daily regimen of episodes of “24” while working. Instead it will be Pandora sending me Christmas variety and I’ll see how I end up by 5PM.

We’ll be spending the Christmas holiday with Tammy’s sister and her family this year, again braving the tundra that is Iowa in December. There’s really nothing quite like watching two adorable nieces open gifts and be beside themselves with joy.

Merry Christmas all!

Weblog Updates

I haven’t written much lately, mostly due to the fact it’s hard to find things to say without taking a lot of time to write. I’ll try to write a few small things each week and keep my few readers up to date.

Blowing Off Steam

I’ve been playing a lot of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 lately.  It’s a fun way to blow off steam and bleed stress at the end of the day.  Yesterday the MW2 “Stimulus Package” came out, a group of new multiplayer maps to explore.  I got the maps downloaded and installed without issue and played for about an hour.  It was certainly fun if not frustrating.  New maps mean new place to hide and I got wiped out plenty times when I forgot to check my corners.

I’ve hit level 64 and that opened up new weapons and challenges to make the final push to Commander.  After almost six months the game is still fun to play and I haven’t even tried the challenges or even a redo of the single player campaign.  This is going to make the upcoming Halo: Reach beta a tough choice–will I split my time?  Probably so.  I mean, it’s Halo and I’ve got a fond nostalgia for the game.

See you online!  My gamer tag is “houseofwarwick”.

Getting started with 2010

I got up plenty early today to try to build a new habit. Well, really it’s an old habit that has gone by the wayside–exercise. Pavel has moved the gym and now it’s a scant 5 minute drive, eliminating all remaining excuses. Today’s workout was shoulders and arms which was a gentle way to work back in to the groove.

The new gym is very nice with warm colors, lower ceilings and better lighting. He put up a new TV today, one with a built-in DVD player to watch movies and such. It made going to the gym a lot more like visiting a club and not just a place to work out.
